- W1892329934 abstract "English or Persian walnut (Juglans regia) and eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) are commercially the most important species. Juglans regia is known for its wood and edible nuts. At present, J. regia represents a major nut crop with an annual worldwide production of 800 000 t (Germain 1990). Juglans regia has long been prized by timber and horticultural industries. Its wood is used for veneer, luxury cabinet work, and other items when quality wood is required. Walnut is a large deciduous tree which can reach 30 m in height under favourable conditions. It is monoecious, and the flowers, produced in spring, are wind-pollinated. Walnut appears to be self- and cross-fertile, though some loss of fruit production may occur when male and female flowers do not mature simultaneously. Therefore, a commercially successful production contains a range of cultivars representing different times of pollen shedding." @default.
