- W189344564 abstract "A series of data are presented and discussed in an attempt to differentiate the calcium pools which are involved in the calcium depletion elicited by morphine and reserpine in rat brain. Reserpine induces a decrease in calcium by levels not only in the brain but also in other body tissues, concomitant with an increase in the plasma calcium content. ESR results showing that reserpine induces a lateral expansion of phospholipids bilayers suggest that a similar structural perturbation might be a possibility in the cell membranes of various body tissues and this could be at the origin of calcium release in vivo. At the brain level, the resulting increases in membrane permeability and sodium influx might represent the trigger mechanism for the well-known reserpine-induced rapid and dramatic fall in monoamines. Contradictory results are discussed concerning the effects of morphine on the calcium levels in various tissues. The difficulties of comparing data on calcium levels obtained in various experimental conditions and by various techniques are underlined. Experimental data showing that morphine produces opposite effects as compared to those of reserpine and that morphine has a calcium-like ordering effect on artificial membranes suggest that at the membrane level, morphine might well be competing for the calcium binding sites and inhibiting calcium transport. It is further suggested that besides its competition with calcium at the level of the lipido-proteinic component of the membrane, morphine might also be interacting in the brain with various molecular components which are peculiar to the cerebral tissue. Both specific and non-specific binding sites of morphine could be involved. The possible calcium-releasing interactions of morphine with gangliosides and with various components of the outer zone of the neuronal membrane as well as with the polyanionic macromolecules of the intercellular spaces are discussed." @default.
