- W189446051 abstract "This chapter presents in vitro nuclear magnetic resonance studies utilizing fluorinated probes. The fluorine nucleus has provided an attractive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) label in a broad range of chemical and biochemical applications as a consequence of several factors. In vivo applications of 19F NMR have been developed along three lines: (1) studies of the metabolism of fluorinated drugs and xenobiotics, (2) studies utilizing fluorinated molecular indicators for cellular ions and other parameters of interest, and (3) studies of the distribution and transport of fluorinated molecules, made possible by the existence of a small but significant intracellular shift. The metabolism of 2- or 3-fluorodeoxyglucose differs from glucose metabolism. Metabolic studies of fluorinated drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil, represent an avenue of in vivo pharmacological studies. In contrast with metabolic or structural studies in which the introduction of a fluorine reporter group represents a significant perturbation, the introduction of indicators involves the use of a foreign compound, so that the use of a fluorine tag is not a problem. NMR observations of endogenous metabolites can provide useful metabolic information." @default.
