- W1898640147 abstract "ABSTRACT A detailed study of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the middle to late Albian Pense Formation was undertaken in southwestern Saskatchewan (Twp. 1-20, Rge. 10-22W3). Shallow-marine shelf sandstones and shales of the Pense Formation overlie either pre-existing interfluve deposits of the Success S2 Formation (fluvial), or valley-fill deposits of the Chokecherry Creek (subtidal, estuarine) or Atlas (non-marine, valley-fill) members of the Cantuar Formation all within the Mannville Group. The base of the Pense Formation represents a transgressive surface of erosion but may also be a sequence boundary. A transgressive systems tract is identified, culminating in deposition of a condensed section historically identified as the Index Horizon Above the Cantuar Marker (IHACM). The IHACM represents sediments deposited during maximum marine inundation of the Pense transgression. The IHACM is characterized by nonbioturbated shale having elevated total organic carbon content and hydrogen indices. Five coarsening-upward/fining-upward cycles are mapped within the Pense Formation above the IHACM. The lowermost of these sandstone/shale cycles is interpreted to be the result of a forced regression. Incised valley deposits occur in Cycles R3 and R5 in the northeast. The shelfal sandstone bodies of the Pense Formation are dominantly quartzose, storm-dominated, originated from sources outside and to the north and northeast of the study area, and were probably transported to this region by longshore shelf processes. RESUME Une etude detaillee de la sedimentologie et de la stratigraphie de la Formation de Pense de l'Albien moyen a superieur a ete entreprise dans le sud-ouest de la Saskatchewan (Twp. 1-20, Rge 10-22W3). Des gres et les shales de plate-forme marine peu profonde recouvrent soit les depots interfluves de la Formation Success S2 (fluvial), soit les depots de remplissage de vallee du membre de Chokecherry Creek (subtidal, estuarien) ou d'Atlas (non-marin, remplissage de vallee) de la Formation de Cantuar, tous du Groupe de Mannville. La base de la Formation de Pense represente une surface d'erosion de transgression mais est peut-etre aussi une limite de sequence. Une cohorte de depots transgressifs est identifiee, culminant avec le depot d'une coupe condensee, identifiee historiquement comme l'horizon Index au-dessus du marqueur Cantuar (HIAMC). Le HIAMC represente les sediments deposes durant l'inondation marine maximum de la transgression Pense. Le HIAMC est caracterise par un shale non-bioturbe qui montre un contenu eleve en carbone organique total et en indices d'hydrogene. Cinq cycles devenant grossiers vers le sommet/s'affinant vers le haut sont cartographies dans la Formation de Pense, au-dessus du HIAMC. Le plus bas de ces cycles gres/shale est interprete comme etant le resultat d'une regression forcee. Les depots de vallee incisee sont presents dans les cycles R3 et R5 au nord-est. Les corps de gres de plate-forme de la Formation de Pense sont surtout quartzeux, a dominance de tempete, originaire de sources situees en dehors et au nord-est de la region d'etude, et ont probablement ete transportes dans cette region par des processus de plate-forme a long rivage.
