- W189883552 abstract "We evaluated the clinical significance of C-11 methionine (C-11 MET) PET in both lung and mediastinal disorders, and then compared the results with F-18 FDG PET. The subjects consisted of 32 patients, including 16 patients with lung cancer, 5 with inflammatory lung disease, and 11 with mediastinal tumors (5 thymic tumors, 2 cystic teratoma, one case of Hodgkin`s disease and 3 other mediastinal tumors). The PET studies were carried out with a HEADTOME III device (14 mm in FWHM). The scan was started 45 min after the administration of either 111-555 MBq C-11 MET or 111-296 MBq F-18 FDG, and the data were collected for a period of 15-20 min. The interval between the C-11 MET and F-18 FDG PET studies was within one week. The regions of interest were established for the tumor and muscle, and then the ratios (tumor/muscle, T/M ratio) were obtained. In the C-11 MET PET study, the T/M ratios were 5.9{plus_minus}2.1 (mean{plus_minus}SD) in the lung ca., 3.6{plus_minus}1.2 in inflammatory lung disease, 7.7{plus_minus}2.7 in thymic tumors. In F-18 FDG PET study, the T/M ratios were 10.2{plus_minus}4.3 in the lung ca., 4.9{plus_minus}1.7 in inflammatory disease, 6.0{plus_minus}1.7 in thymic tumors. There was a significant difference in the C-11more » MET uptake ratio between malignant and benign lung disease as well as for FDG PET. There was also a significant correlation between the T/M ratios of the C-11 MET and F-18 FDG in lung diseases and non-thymic mediastinal tumors. However, thymic tumors showed the highest uptake in C-11 MET PET, while this was not the case in FDG PET. Thus, we were able to distinguish thymic tumors from other mediastinal tumors using C-11 MET PET. We therefore concluded that C-11 MET PET was useful in the diagnosis of lung and mediastinal disorders in combination with F-18 FDG PET.« less" @default.
