- W1900363462 abstract "ABSTRACT The Notikewin Member of the Fort St. John Group is correlative with the upper 46 to 77 m of the Gates Formation in northeastern British Columbia. The lower portion of the member is transgressive in origin. The upper portions were deposited in a progradational, mesotidal barrier island system, representing the leading edge of a northerly prograding, low-relief coastal plain. The basal Notikewin is a thin, pebbly transgressive lag deposit above carbonaceous nonmarine shale, sandstone and, locally, conglomerate of the lower Gates (Falher Member equivalent). Overlying the transgressive lag is a 3 to 10 m thick, fining-upward, transgressive phase of interbedded sandstone, conglomerate and shale. The sandstones are and the conglomerates are moulded into symmetrical gravel dunes; both features indicate storm processes were common during the transgression. The regressive phase is a 20 to 30 m thick coarsening-upward sequence showing much less evidence of storm influence. Locally, sandstones 10 to 20 m thick, interpreted to be tidal inlet deposits, cut through and replace shoreface sediments. Specimens of Ostrea found in strata above the inlet sandstones suggest brackish conditions and locally form banks. The Ostrea beds provide a good local stratigraphic marker in the Bullmoose Mountain area. Sedimentary structures in interbedded sandstones, siltstones and shales, as well as reversing paleoflow directions, indicate a low-wave-energy coast dominated by tidal-flat and inlet processes. This is in marked contrast to the high-energy, wave-dominated shorelines of the underlying Falher Member. Paleocurrent data and regional mapping indicate that shoreline orientation was approximately east-west. The upper 20 to 30 m of the Notikewin is nonmarine flood-plain and overbank deposits with thin (less than 1 m) coals, lagoonal shales and siltstones, and rare channel deposits. La partie inferieure du membre fut deposee pendant une transgression. Les parties superieures furent deposees dans un systeme de crete d'avant-plage emergee a meso-maree qui progresse vers la mer; ce crete represente la limite d'une plaine littorale de bas relief qui avance vers le nord. Le Notikewin de base est un residu de deflation, mince, caillouteux et transgressif qui repose sur du schiste carbonneux non-marin, du gres et localement sur du conglomerat du Gates inferieur (equivalent du membre Fahler). Une serie transgressive de gres interstratifie, de conglomerat et de schiste argileux, dont l'epaisseur varie de 3 a 10 metres, repose sur le residu de deflation. Cette serie est affinee vers le haut. Ces gres sont hummocky cross-stratified et les conglomerats sont moules dans des dunes de gravier symetriques, ces caracteristiques montrent que les tempetes etaient frequentes pendant la transgression. La phase de regression est une serie de 20-30 metres, plus grossiere vers le haut, ou l'influence des tempetes est beaucoup moins prononcee. Dans certains endroits des gres de 10-20 metres d'epaisseur, interpretes comme des passes, coupent et meme remplacent les sediments d'avant-cote. Des echantillons d'Ostrea trouvees dans les couches sus-jacentes aux gres de passes indiquent des conditions saumetres et dans certains endroits, forment des rives. Ces couches d'Ostrea sont une excellente repere stratigraphique dans l'endroit de Bullmoose Mountain. Les structures sedimentaires dans des gres interstratifies, siltstones et schistes argileux non seulement inversent des directions de paleo-ecoulement mais aussi indiquent un coteau. L'energie de vagues etait faible, domine par des processus d'estrans et de passes. Ceci fait contraste avec le membre Falher sous-jacent dont les cotes temoignent le haute energie des donnees vagues. Des donnees de paleocourants et le cartographie regionale indiquent que le direction de la cote etait est-ouest (a peu pres). Une plaine non-marine d'inondation et des depots alluviaux d'inondation avec des houilles minces (moins de 1 m), des schistes argileux lagunaires et siltstones, et des gites en forme de trainees rares, forment les 20-30 m superieurs du Notikewin." @default.
