- W190117232 abstract "ABSTRACT Dental alloys for the porcelain-fused-to-metal technique have recently gone through an evolutionary change. The Pd-Au alloys have become quite successful since they offer superior properties at lower costs. A typical alloy composition (38% Pd-52% Au) was given a thorough investigation to determine mechanical properties, microstructure and working characteristics. Hardness and tensile properties following various heat treatments evidence an aging reaction not previously observed in this alloy class. Scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to examine the fine microstructure. No evidence could be found of second phase formation; however, a possible superlattice has been identified which is indicative of spinodal hardening. Examinations at different cold working levels indicated a tendency for planar slip. Accordingly large strain hardening exponents are observed at low plastic strains. Fracture surface examinations by scanning electron microscopy combined with optical metallography help explain the unique strength and ductility combination possible in this alloy. Furthermore, modified alloy chemistries help explain the role of the minor alloying ingredients (Zn, In, Sn and Re). These various data are brought together to explain the alloy properties and to suggest possible means of further improving properties." @default.
