• W190322449 abstract "Dynamic hydrogels undergo structural changes in response to specific external stimuli, and the structural modification is accompanied by changes in the physical and chemical properties of the hydrogel. The ability to alter these properties in a controllable manner has allowed hydrogels to be employed in a diverse set of biomedical applications: targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, molecule sensing, and autonomous control in biomedical devices. Temperature, pH, and ligand binding are some of the environmental cues that have been used to trigger changes in hydrogels. The stimuli work by altering the balance of intermolecular and intramolecular forces, such as hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, between the chains in the hydrogel and the solvent. In some cases, the conformational change is reversible, while for other mechanisms, the polymer structure is irreversibly altered. A variety of polymers, peptides, and nanoparticles have been used to create responsive hydrogels. The availability of a diverse range of materials allows the properties of the hydrogel to be tailored to the application of interest. This chapter reviews the historical development of dynamic hydrogels, discusses the various mechanisms by which the structural changes take place, and presents select biomedical applications where these materials are being employed." @default.
