- W190934907 abstract "During the last 20 years a very large number of randomized double-blind trials have been performed to study the influence of beta-blockers on mortality and morbidity in patients who survived the acute myocardial infarction. The majority of these studies are of late entry type with start of treatment about 2 weeks after onset of infarction and with 1–3 years of follow- up. By pooling all these studies the total number of patients involved is about 20,000 and the beta-blockers reduced both mortality and incidence of a reinfraction by about 25 percent, respectively. The most convincing of these postinfarction studies of late entry type were the Norwegian timolol trial and the American propranolol trial (BHAT) published in 1981 with a 36 and 26 percent reduction in mortality, respectively. Also in 1981 the first convincing study of early entry type with start of treatment shortly after onset of infarction was published. This was the Swedish metoprolol trial which showed a reduction in total mortality by 36 percent after 3 months. With continued metropolol treatment in both groups after 3 months, the early beneficial effects were maintained over 2 years. The prophylactic instituion of metoprolol also prevented development of infarction by 35 percent during 3 months." @default.
