- W191093785 abstract "In a previous article in this journal I argued, from a reconstruction and analysis of the census material for New France, that the seigniorial system of land tenure imposed an economic burden upon the average farm family in the colony. I also argued that this economic burden (shifting income from the farmer to the seignior) diminished from 1688 to 1739 and never represented an overwhelming proportion of the economic surplus produced by the average farm family.1 Further research forces some revisions of my estimates of the extent of the economic burden imposed by the seigniorial tenure, although the tone of the argument remains the same. ,Also the constraints placed upon intensive economic growth by the seigniorial system can now be placed in the context of my recently developed estimates of real gross domestic product for New France.2 I also present, in this paper, estimates for the profitability of banal grist mills. To derive estimates of the economic burden of the seigniorial tenure I divide the value of the different seigniorial charges incurred on the farm family by the value of the economic surplus produced by the farm family. My lower-bound estimate of the gross economic surplus consists of gross wheat output net of seed requirements and the wheat consumption requirements per farm. My upper-bound estimate consists of the lower-bound estimate plus an estimate for the non-agricultural surplus. It is only my estimate of surplus wheat output which is revised in this paper. And, it is revised upward. This change is due to new lower estimates for seed requirements (table 1," @default.
