- W191506548 abstract "lt is believed that the mutation of somatic cells is the result of chromosome damage by radiation which affects the synthesis of some vital protein which changes the reduplication properties of DNA and results in mutants. Chromosomal material is very sensitive during the moment of condensation, and 8 to 10 rads can stop the division at this time. The cell is particularly radiosensitive during periods of mitotic activity. Thus, old'' cultures of bacteria show a lowered sensitivity to radiation, while growing cancer cells are more radiosensitive than normal cells. Nerve tissue is highly sensitive to radiation. The effects of small doses of radiation administered internally have been shown to be additive. Regenerative processes can also occur. The stimulatimg effects of ionizing radiation are reviewed. It is thought that the origin of cancerous growths by irradiation may be due to cell mutation. The occurrence of osteosarcoma and leukemia by injection of Sr/sup 90/ is discussed. The additiveness of irradiation dose can be observed in the incidence of cancer. A number of the effects of ionizing radiation can be detected at small doses. One of the important conclusions of the review is the recognition that a living organism lacks the ability to adaptmore » itself to the action of ionizing radiation. 58 references.
