- W191517526 abstract "The two-compartment model has been widely known as a tool for kinetic urea modeling in hemodialysis. On the other hand the Regional Blood Flow (RBF) model, based on the flows transporting the marker toxin, seems to be another attractive solution. Both models correctly show the rebound effect and may be tuned to the experimental data. However, they differ considerably. The RBF model is much more related to the physiology but to the person used to the two-pool model looks complicated and requires quite many parameters to be defined. Therefore, the relevant study had to be performed to verify if there is a possiblity to suggest a model located conceptually somewhere between the two-pool and the RBF models. The fundamental assumption was that the changes of the two-compartment model should be as little as possible but the toxin should travel with the flows. Two models, serial and parallel, had been designed and were comparatively investigated with use of of 400 modeling sessions obtained by changing the selected parameters of the 16 patients dialysis data. Both proposed models were compared mutually and with the classical two-compartment model. The results indicate that for the typical data values both suggested models may be used exchangeably. The dependence between the flow-based model parameters and the intercompartmental clearance (Kc) in the two-pool model may be used to explain the observed problems with Kc while tuning to the experimental data. The formula to compute Kc from the flow model parameters has been derived. Finally, the analytical solution, originally designed for the RBF model, had been adapted to all three discussed models, flow-based and basic two-pool, and succesfully used for approximation of the urea concentration values at the end of dialysis." @default.
