- W191551207 abstract "The three metabolites ATP, ADP and AMP may be considered as a common pool connected by adenylate kinase, which in eucaryotic cells, including red blood cells, is present in sufficiently large amounts as to establish an equilibrium among the adenine nucleotides. The immediate substrate for the adenine nucleotide degradation is AMP. In red blood cells there exist two pathways for the breakdown of AMP: (i) one yielding adenosine which may be deaminated to inosine or rephosphorylated to AMP and (ii) one producing IMP by deamination and inosine by dephosphorylation of IMP. From inosine there is formed hypoxanthine by the action of nucleoside phosphorylase. For mature erythrocytes, the existence of both pathways has been established. Under physiological conditions the degradation via IMP is the predominant pathway.1–3 In this study we continue the quantifications of adenine nucleotide breakdown in mature erythrocytes and reticulocytes. We have investigated conditions of glucose starvation which lead to an accelerated adenine nucleotide breakdown." @default.
