- W1916223090 abstract "Publisher Summary Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is responsible for several important enteric diseases, quite apart from its leading role as the cause of clostridial histotoxic infections. Human enteric illnesses associated with this anaerobic, Gram positive, spore-forming bacterium includes C. perfringens type A food poisoning, C. perfringens enterotoxin (CPE)-associated non-food borne gastrointestinal diseases, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and sporadic non-food-borne diarrhoea, and enteritis necroticans. C. perfringens is also an important cause of enteric diseases in animals. The involvement of C. perfringens in gastrointestinal diseases is not surprising, since this bacterium is very well adapted for growth in the anaerobic environment of the gastrointestinal tract. Antibiotic therapy, which disturbs the normal colonic flora, is a predisposing factor for developing CPE-associated nonfood borne gastrointestinal disease, and poor nutritional status is a major factor that contributes to the development of most cases of enteritis necroticans. Two of the most important human enteric diseases caused by C. perfringens, food poisoning and enteritis necroticans, are typically acquired through food-borne transmission. Because of the association between C. perfringens and food-borne disease, the organism possesses several characteristics that make it an ideal candidate for foodborne transmission." @default.
