- W191901485 abstract "This article is a summary of a 5-year research and development effort on monitoring earth dams for failure via accoustical emissions. An overview of accoustic emission-monitoring sytem is described as well as field monitoring studies. It is noted that at a time when earth dams appear to be failing at an alarming rate, a nondestructive testing method to assess their stability seems extremely desirable. The acoustic emission method seems to have advantages over others because of initial economy, rapid data acquisition, and relative ease of data interpretation. This data interpretation can be qualitatively placed into four classifications: Soil masses that do not generate acoustic emissions are not deforming and are safe, soil masses that generate acoustic emissions to a moderate degree are deforming slightly and are considered to be marginal, soil masses that generate large amounts of acoustic emission are deforming substantially and are to be considered unstable, and soil masses that generate very high acoustic emission levels are undergoing large deformations and can be considered to be in a failure state." @default.
