- W1919233981 abstract "Summary The effect of dietary protein content on the threonine and serine dehydrase and tryptophan pyrrolase activities of rat liver and of Morris Hepatoma 5123 was studied in Buffalo strain rats of both sexes bearing the Hepatoma 5123. In tumor-bearing animals the activities of the threonine and serine dehydrase in Hepatoma 5123 were very high and did not change with dietary protein as did that of the host and control liver. However, in some male animals carrying two of the four sublines of the tumor, the activity of these two enzymes in the tumor was low and did not vary with dietary protein. This effect may be mediated through the adrenal gland, since adrenalectomized tumor-bearing animals of both sexes showed low dehydrase activities in both host liver and all sublines of the hepatoma. When a high protein diet was fed to the adrenalectomized animals there was no change in these enzyme activities in the neoplasm, but the host liver responded by a marked increase in threonine and serine dehydrase after 6 days on a 91 per cent protein diet. In contrast, tryptophan pyrrolase activity was low in the Morris Hepatoma 5123 in both sexes and did not change with any dietary regimen followed, whereas some change was noted in the level of this enzyme in the host liver after diets of varying protein content were fed. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to our knowledge of the control of enzyme synthesis in microorganisms and mammals as well as the role of defective enzyme induction in the neoplastic character exhibited by the Morris Hepatoma 5123." @default.
