- W192055209 abstract "Recent years have seen the rapid rise of household waste recycling in many countries where until recently it was considered relatively unproblematic to consign all household waste to landfill or incineration. This rise is against a backdrop of decades of largely ineffective declarations of intent to pursue sustainability in waste management by national and international governing bodies. Step changes in recycling growth rates followed concerted state action to change infrastructures of waste collection down to the household level. In the process, household routines and practices have had to become reshaped, as things previously consigned to a single dustbin are cleaned, categorised, and sorted. The rise of household waste recycling therefore provides a lens upon specific convergences between global environmental concerns and mundane household practices, through changes in governing across scales and the reconfiguring of infrastructures and systems of waste and of the materials economy. At the same time, through the changes effected upon what householders do with waste products, the rise of recycling draws attention to the symbolic as well as practical purposes achieved by the valuation, sorting, and categorisation of matter as waste or resource in the reproduction of the space and meaning of home." @default.
