- W19209964 abstract "The initial steps of the pheromone response pathway of the unicellular baker’s or brewer’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae involve a heterotrimeric G-protein, and this response pathway is necessary for the sexual phase of the yeast life cycle. Yeast cells can grow as either haploid or diploid cells, and the haploid yeast cells can exist in one of two sexes, or mating types, designated a and α (Herskowitz 1988). The two haploid cell types communicate by means of small diffusible molecules, termed pheromones, which interact with cell-type-specific receptor proteins on the surface of the two types of haploid cells (Marsh et al. 1991; Kurjan and Whiteway 1990). These receptor proteins are members of the rhodopsin-like seven-transmembrane-domain, or serpentine, class of receptors. As is characteristic of such proteins, the pheromone receptors communicate to the intracellular machinery through a G-protein (Simon et al. 1991). The availability of a G-protein system in an experimentally manipulatable unicellular eukaryotic cell provides a useful model system for the genetic investigation of G-proteins." @default.
