- W192121018 abstract "The 1970s was a time in which the era of explosive economic growth since the end of World War II was slowing, if not ending. Development came under serious analysis, criticism, and questioning in many nations. Was it possible to have ever increasing levels of economic wealth? What was happening to our basic life support system of the biosphere as industrial activity and personal consumption increased? Were there enough resources and energy to sustain a much longer period of rapid economic growth? People began to look for an alternative paradigm or view of the world that would be better suited to developing a sustainable system of humans and nature in contradistinction to much of the short-term economic gain that so strongly influenced corporate and governmental decision making. The environmental movement of this period gained ground as the realization of the deterioration of the environment became abundantly manifest and as the connectivity of the biosphere became a predominant theme (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 1970, Commoner 1971, Meadows et al. 1972, Watt 1974). If this were not enough ammunition to question the goal of continued economic growth, the oil embargo of 1973 was a dramatic illustration of the dependence of the industrialized nations on energy and of the finite and limited storages of fossil fuels, which were the primary energy sources. Political, public, and scientific interest in problems associated with environment, resources, and economics grew rapidly and many studies, programs, laws, and scientific theories emerged." @default.
