- W192208714 abstract "Publisher SummaryTransport of nuclear waste is a key component in the development of waste management and decommissioning strategies. This may involve movement to an alternative location such as a long-term or interim store on the waste arising site. The IAEA Transport Regulations form the basis for the regulations governing the transport of radioactive materials in the UK, as well as for the regulatory requirements set by international organisations, regional bodies, international agreements, and conventions governing the international transport of radioactive materials by sea, air, road, rail, and inland waterways. The regulations recognize that a wide range of radioactive material of varying characteristics requires to be transported, and aim to provide a uniform level of safety that is commensurate with the inherent hazard presented by the radioactive material being transported. Safety features are built into the design of the package, as far as is feasible, thereby placing primary reliance on the package design and preparation, rather than on the need for any special actions during carriage. Competent authority approval is also required for special arrangements and for certain shipments. Moreover, transporters should also meet some mode-specific requirements, such as the total activity limit for a conveyance, as well as operational requirements." @default.
