THE CONCRETES WERE SUBJECTED TO THE FOLLOWING TESTS: /1/ FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 6X6X30 INCH BEAMS AT 28 DAYS, /2/ FOR 5 1/2 SACK MIXES ONLY-FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTS ON 6X6X30- IN. BEAMS AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 6 BY 12-IN. CYLINDERS AT 3,7, AND 28 DAYS AND ONE YEAR, /3/ FREEZING AND THAWING TESTS OF 3X3X11 1/4- IN. SPECIMENS, /4/ RESISTANCE TO SURFACE SCALING FROM THE USE OF SALTS FOR ICE REMOVAL, /5/ CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AIR VOIDS IN THE HARDENED CONCRETES, SUCH AS SPECIFIC SURFACE AND BUBBLE SPACING. THE DATA SHOWED THAT THE OPTIMUM AIR CONTENTS INCREASED AS THE MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE DECREASED. THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT EFFECT OF CEMENT CONTENT ON THE OPTIMUM AIR CONTENTS FOR CONCRETES WHOSE CURING INCLUDED A PERIOD OF DRYING. CONCRETE RESISTANT TO FREEZING AND THAWING CAN BE SECURED BY PROVIDING A RELATIVELY CONSTANT AIR CONTENT IN THE MORTAR FRACTION REGARDLESS OF CEMENT OR MORTAR CONTENT OF THE MIX FOR CONCRETES WHOSE CURING INCLUDED A PERIOD OF DRYING ( ABOUT 9% AIR IN THESE TESTS). THE SPACING FACTOR FOR THE AIR VOIDS AT THE OPTIMUM AIR CONTENT RANGED FROM 0.006 TO 0.003- IN. CONCRETES CURED CONTINUOUSLY MOIST REQUIRED SLIGHTLY MORE ENTRAINED AIR FOR ADEQUATE RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING THAN CONCRETES WHOSE CURING INCLUDED A PERIOD OF AIR DRYING, EXCEPT FOR THE 4 SACK CONCRETE MADE WITH MAXIMUM SIZES OF AGGREGATE 3/4 INCHES AND LARGER. /AUTHOR/" @default.
