- W1922799163 abstract "Previous applications of benthic microbial fuel cells (BMFCs) have generally focused on generation of electrical energy for low-power (1–10 mW) electronic seafloor devices. This low power restriction is due in part to the ease of deploying small BMFC electrodes in comparison to the complexity associated with deploying large BMFCs. In addition, recent findings suggest that internal resistance, sediment heterogeneity, and other factors limit the scale-up of individual BMFC systems such that power density does not necessarily increase in proportion to electrode surface area. Thus, it is expected that to achieve higher power levels that are consistent with operational requirements (100–1000 mW), future large-scale BMFCs should not only be easily deployable, but also be composed of collections of smaller electrodes as a compromise between system size and complexity, and power density. Moreover, compartmentalizing the total BMFC anodes into smaller segments will also mitigate variability associated with single, large electrode BMFC deployments. The goal of this chapter is to describe developing methods for the construction, deployment, and operation of larger-scale BMFCs, as well as of segmented BFMCs, with results illustrated through a selected example data set. In this chapter, a large-scale BMFC refers to one with a total anode surface area of at least 4 m2. A segmented BMFC is a collection of multiple small BMFC systems that are deployed as a single system with a comparable total anode surface area of at least 4 m2. Overall, the construction and deployment technology we developed and describe in detail in this chapter have enabled us to build, deploy, and operate large-scale BMFC systems at increasingly high and sustainable power levels." @default.
