- W1924119907 abstract "This study is trying to revisit the question that what makes the difference in understanding of conveyed information and thus response by each consumer facing the same food safety issue. We adopted structural equation model previous studies utilized and includes some control variables such as message framing and experience of taking a lecture regarding food safety in addition to the conventional socio-demographic variables. The MSG debate in S. Korea was selected as the food safety issue. We choose this issue to avoid the recency effect. To acquire the consumer opinion, we utilized a group survey, specifically a classroom experiment that manipulates news regarding MSG. We found that college students have more risk perception when they have less knowledge about MSG. Their trust also has negative impacts on the perceived risk, indicating that if they have strong trust in related institution or group, they perceive less risk. When they have more negative attitude toward MSG, they have higher risk perception. A positive relationship between risk perception and intention-to-avoid is represented, suggesting that students who have higher risk perception show higher intention-to-avoid. Regarding control variables, it was found that college students’ intention-to-avoid varies depends on what types of message they receive. Respondents who aged more show higher intention-to-avoid, and students who have taken class regarding food safety also show lower intention-to-avoid However, intention-to-avoid is not influenced by gender, presence of children under 14 among family, existence of patient in family, experience of food-borne illness." @default.
