- W1927432295 abstract "Diverse perspectives on factions exist in political science literature and something of a mixed picture exists in this respect in relation to party factionalism and democratization in Eastern Europe. In Poland party factions were formally recognized in the statute of the Democratic Union until its merger with the Liberal Democratic Congress, although for much of the time it remained a relatively unified if rather ineffective political force. The record of five other parties which gained significant parliamentary representation following the 1991 elections is also examined. While the post‐communist Social Democracy and Polish Peasant Party remained relatively free from factional activity, the removal of the threat of anti‐communist lustration and the strains of government office following the elections of 1993 may well see a change in this picture. Most drastically affected by internal party conflict and factionalism was the Centre Accord, which contributed to the very poor showing of right‐wing parties in the 1993 elections. The relation of factional activity to democratization is thus somewhat mixed. Factionalism certainly reduced the extent of right‐wing representation and thus the degree of parliamentary pluralism following the 1993 elections, but a more thorough‐going play of factional tendencies might have helped define the identity of the Democratic Union and enhanced the effectiveness of party activity." @default.
