The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of subthreshold autistic traits in a sample of undergraduate medical students recruited from the Pavia University School of Medicine. We also determined the potential association between autistic traits and the students’ preferences on their future specialty choice. Methods: 135 undergraduate Italian medical students were asked to fill the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), a short self-administered scale which measures autistic traits in individuals with normal cognitive abilities. Participants were divided into 7 groups according to their specialty. Intergroup differences were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: the sample showed low-to-mild autistic traits (mean AQ score 17.09±5.05, cut-off for high levels of autistic traits 32). There was a statistically significant difference (p=0.013) between surgery and psychiatry on the “Imagination” subscale of the AQ. Conclusions: to our knowledge, our study is the first to assess Italian students using the AQ. Our findings of a significant relation between AQ scores and the future choice of a particular medical specialty confirm that the professional attitudes may be interrelated with specific interpersonal skills as well as autistic traits." @default.
