- W1932508719 abstract "Following the identification of gold in a pannedconcentrate sample from the diverted headwaters ofGlenhead Burn, south-east of Loch Trool in Galloway,Scotland, and the discovery of nativegold with arsenopyritein a quartz vein upstream of this site, a programme ofgeochemical exploration of the margin and aureole of theLoch Doon plutonic complex in the drainage basin wasinitiated. Since rock samples showed a highly significantpositive correlation between gold and arsenic levels a soilgrid was sampled in the contact zone and analysed forarsenic, together with copper, lead and zinc. Severalarsenic anomalies with levels exceeding 1000 ppm werefound within the pluton and its aureole and seven shallowboreholes were drilled to test their source. Geophysicalsurveys using magnetic, Slingram EM, VLF and IPmethods were carried out but none showed anomalieswhich correlated with zones of high arsenic in soil.In the area around the headwaters of Glenhead Burn, the Loch Doon plutonic complex is intrusive into asequence of graded turbiditesof probable Caradocian age.In the northern part of the area, steeply-dippinggreywacke horizons young consistently to the north while inthe south there is evidence of several tight upright folds.South of the area there is a large-scale reclined folddeveloped in the siliceous mudstones, shales and cherts of a“black shale belt”, though a major strike fault mayseparate the two sequences. Swarms of concordant minorintrusive rocks of quartz monzonite and granodiorite.which predate the pluton, have been encountered in itsaureole. Major differences in chemistry exist between theseminor intrusions and the composition of the margin of theplutonic complex.A pervasive phase of metasomatism has affected thesedimentary rocks throughout the area, producing veinsand lenses of fine granular quartz accompanied byactinolite, salitic pyroxene, fine magnetite and pyrrhotite, and occasionally carbonate, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, sphene, clinozoisite, epidote and apatite. These aresurrounded by greener envelopes rich in actinolite whichgrade into normal hornfelsed sediment. Close to thepluton, clinopyroxene is more conspicuous and betterformedin both altered and unaltered hornfelsed rock.Chemical data indicate that two types of metasomaticallyaltered zones occur, one enriched in calcium and somemanganese and strontium, and the other enriched insilicon. The minor igneous rocks are unaffected by themetasomatism but show contact metamorphism due to thepluton ,.Two phases of gold- bearing, arsenic-rich mineralisationhave been recognised. The earlier comprises disseminationsof pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and pyrite in the1margins of’ monzonitic minor intrusions anddisseminations of arsenopyrite in the adjacentmetasediments. This mineralisation occurs in zones up toat least 18 m thick with arsenic levels reaching 3000 ppmand gold 0.16 ppm in samples of around one metre of core.It is probable that the majority of soil arsenic anomalies, particularly the lensoid variety trending parallel to thestrike, originate from this type of mineralisation.Superimposed upon this are a series of discordant quartzveins and stringers trending roughly south and cutting allrock types. These may be richly mineralised witharsenopyrite and some pyrite and may contain minutegrains of native gold. Surrounding the veins is a prominentalteration envelope of sericitic material, commonly withconspicuous disseminated arsenopyrite. Individual veinsrange up to 30 cm thick but thicker stockwork zones alsoexist. Arsenic levels in 200-300 gsamples of veined materialreach over 3.5oJ, and gold assays up to 8.8 ppm have beenobtained. A separate minor phase of sphalerite and galcnamineralisation also occurs within the area, usually inassociation with carbonate veinlets." @default.
