- W1932842596 abstract "OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to determine whether the perception of emotional expression on the face is asymmetric and that certain emotional qualities are more commonly perceived on the left or right hemiface. BACKGROUND: Previous investigations have suggested that some emotional facial expressions are more commonly expressed on the right hemiface, some on the left. Some have even suggested there is a dichotomy between positive and negative emotions on each side of the face. In our study, we are interested specifically in these emotional parameters: happy, friendly, rational, disturbing, as perceived on each hemiface. DESIGN/METHODS: Our study involved 60 men and women between the ages of 15 and 80 years. Study participants were shown a series of 30 pairs of facial chimeras. Facial chimeras were constructed by taking one half of a face and combining it with its mirror image to form a new face. For each pair of left and right facial chimeras, subjects were asked to assess which chimera appeared more friendly, happy, rational, or disturbing. Subjects were also asked whether they knew the individual in the chimera personally. RESULTS: The right chimera was perceived as more rational 622 times versus 548 times on the left (p<0.05). The left chimera was perceived as more happy 673 times, versus 586 (p<0.05). The assessment of friendly and disturbing did not reach significance on either side of the face. Familiarity with the individual in the chimera did not alter these results. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the left hemiface is dominant for positive emotional expression, while right hemiface is perceived as more rational. This study contributes to further elucidating the lateralization of the emotional expression in the brain. Study Supported by: Disclosure: Dr. Wei has nothing to disclose.
