- W193426776 abstract "Many families and businesses relocate each year. Depending upon the quantities of goods and distances of relocation, long distance moving company services are often used. This Resources in Technology will focus on the technologies used by long distance movers to relocate the possessions of families and businesses. After a family or business decides to move, they usually contact a moving company if their move is of any substantial weight/quantity and distance. If the move is local, the choice may be to rent a U-Haul or Ryder truck or contact a local mover such as Two Men and a Truck. For long moves, it is usually more efficient to hire a long distance moving company. Examples of such companies are Allied, North American, Bekins, Mayflower, United, and Atlas Van Lines. These long-distance movers are full-service companies, and they provide equipment and trained employees to assist with the move. Moving Stages There are various stages involved in moving. These include preparation, packing, loading, inventory and paperwork, en route, delivery, payment, and unpacking. The preparation stage involves your initial contact with the long distance moving company's booking agent. The company will send a moving counselor to your home or business to explain the services they can provide; i.e., packing, hauling, unpacking. The moving counselor will survey your home or business. They will discuss packing and moving plans, indicate what you might need to do before the move (disconnect computers or gas ranges), and inform you of things that cannot be moved; i.e., paint cans and solvents. They will also provide an estimated cost of the move. In the past the estimate was more of an estimate, with the counselor using books or experience to calculate the weight and square footage of your possessions. Today, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and specialty software speed up the process and provide easy access to information. Examples of such products include vantrax[TM], Home Touch[TM], iPocket[TM], and MoveLink[TM]. Figure 1 shows vantrax loaded into a PDA. Simple taps are made on the screen as with most PDAs to register the rooms and items to be moved. These taps can provide estimates of cubic feet for each item to be moved. A total of cubic feet is calculated and rates are entered into the PDA to produce the estimate for the customer. The number and size of boxes can also be estimated. Signatures can also be completed electronically. See Figure 2 for a screen capture. [FIGURES 1-2 OMITTED] After the estimate is accepted and a moving date arranged, the next step involved in the move is packing. The moving counselor will explain that the agent can do the packing for you at a cost. They can also provide boxes if you plan to do the packing, or you can provide your own. If the moving agent is going to do the packing, they will do it the morning of the move or the day before, depending on the amount of items to be packed. There are specialty boxes designed for hanging clothing and for packing dishes and glassware. On the day of the move the van driver, also known as the van foreman, will arrive at a scheduled time. One or more helpers will assist in loading your possessions into the van. It is not unusual for the van driver to have only one helper who works with him to load, move, and unload the furniture and boxes for a home move. The driver is called a van foreman because he does more than just drive the cargo. He works with the helper(s) to plan the loading, preparing the floors and doorways with padding so the house is not damaged in the move, preparing the bill of lading and inventory list, and protecting items so they will not be scratched or damaged during the move. The loading of the van requires knowledge of packing for efficiency and prevention of damage. It is loaded in tiers with heavy objects on the bottom to prevent shifting during the move. …" @default.
