- W193591507 abstract "Jennifer L. Altieri (2011) Content Counts: Developing Disciplinary Literacy Skill K-6 Newark, DE: International Reading Association Orientation to this Review My 37 years of teaching have been split almost equally between Education Queensland the State education System--and what is now called Edmund Rice Education Australia, an independent Catholic System founded by the Christian Brothers. In that time, I have taught mainly secondary school science and mathematics. I did, however, have an eight year period as an Educational Advisor for Education Queensland where I presented the Learning to Learn Through Reading (LTLTR) Program to both primary and secondary schools in the Central Queensland Region. This program was based on the Effective Reading in the Content Area (ERICA) Model developed by Bert Morris and Nea Stewart-Dore. As part of the program delivery, I would work with teachers to develop content area units of work incorporating ERICA (content area reading) strategies. On re-entering the classroom, I was involved in developing a transition program for students from primary school into secondary school. This involved me having the one class of students for English, Mathematics and Science, incorporating all three disciplines by way of thematic units of work. The major advantage of this approach in terms of literacy was that the content drove the literacy. In doing this, colleagues and I did not neglect the creative side of language but chose novels, poetry and song, as well as plays that fitted in with the theme. In terms of the mathematics and science, the students were more able to transfer their knowledge and skills to new and unfamiliar situations. I trust this gives some credibility to my position in reviewing Jennifer Altieri's book, Content Counts: Developing Disciplinary Literacy Skill K-6. Review This is an easy and practical book to read. But this is not a book to be just read: it is a book to be used. As well as providing many practical strategies for teachers to try with their students, Jennifer has interspersed the text with two valuable directions: 'Try it out', and 'Discussion Points'. Therefore, you must work with the text as you 'Try it out'. Further, it would be most beneficial if you could do that with a team to add value to the 'Discussion Points'. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 highlights the tensions between literacy development and content areas such as science and social studies that are caused by traditional approaches to literacy learning. Two significant points Jennifer raises are these: firstly, the time spent in classrooms on reading, writing and spelling (and numeracy) leaves little time to even attempt to address the other content areas; secondly, the traditional approaches to literacy teaching focus on the narrative genre. Therefore, when it comes to the content areas, students are unable to cope with the literacy demands placed on them. Consequently, they struggle with the subject content and may come to dislike it. How many times have we heard students say 'I can't do maths'? It is not a lack of understanding of the subject per se that is the hindrance, but rather, not having the necessary literacy skills to be able to decode the subject's discourse. As a teacher in the science domain, I am aware of the huge range of literacy demands within it--from the densest forms of an academic thesis, through text books to journals and science fiction novels, each one with its own special demands and context to be understood before the scientific knowledge can be gleaned from them. Just recently, I attended a symposium where PhD students were presenting summaries of their doctoral theses. Each one had to present their thesis in the form of a poster and a 20 minute talk, after which they were grilled on their understanding of their work. This academic situation may be well removed from Jennifer's audience of K-6 teachers, but the relative demands are similar. …" @default.
