- W193608164 abstract "According to Wilkinson's single-particle model of photonuclear reactions, the giant resonance for photosplitting is due to transfer of a nucleon to a higher shell in the nucleus. Elliott and Flowers in Proc. Roy. Soc. A, 242: 57(1957) were able to fix the position of the giant resonance for light elements correctly by taking into account residual interaction in the nucleus in describing the dipole states. Detailed calculations based on diagonalization of the energy matrix are cumbersome, and were cara/sup 40/, and Pb/sup 208/. The calculations for Pb/sup 208/ show that it is necessary to go beyond the shell model, because the giant resonance of Pb/sup 208/ is too narrow. An additional source of broadening of the dipole state was found by taking into account the phonon surface excitations of the nucleus. Hence, a generating procedure of constructing the function of the dipole state was developed to describe the principal, macroscopic properties of the collective dipole states of average and heavy nuclei.
