- W193670630 abstract "Nematophagous fungi have continued to attract attention since their function as predators of nematodes was first recognized at the end of the last century (Zopf, 1888). This fascination is in large part due to the dramatic capturing of nematodes, which can easily be demonstrated when a petri dish sprinkled with soil of appropriate origin is observed under the light microscope. The remarkable morphological adaptations among these fungi are further reasons for continuing interest. The role of these fungi in natural or applied biological control of plant parasitic nematodes has attracted more recent attention. The lack of promising results in early studies within this field, however, has demanded a better understanding of the ecology of these fungi (Cooke, 1968). The continued need for alternative control methods has aroused an interest among current researchers in this field who hope to correlate laboratory results with field investigations for a better understanding of the function of these fungi in soil." @default.
