- W19372906 abstract "Global expression analysis with DNA microarrays is exquisitely suited to monitor changes in mRNA levels arising from disturbances of the cellular environment. Viral infections are among the most dramatic perturbations a cell can undergo. Therefore, this functional genomics tool promises new insights into the interaction between the virus and host cell. The interface of virus and host can be targeted for drug discovery, as shown by several recent studies demonstrating that inhibiting host-cell proteins can prevent viral infection. Although these results were obtained by hypothesis-driven research, many laboratories have embarked on data-driven approaches based on the systematic analysis of virus-induced changes in the gene-expression profile of the host cell. Based on these results, it is now possible to determine the relevance of cellular genes that change upon viral infection. Cellular gene products that are essential for viral replication represent novel molecular targets for drug discovery, thus expanding target discovery in virology—an area thus far limited to genes encoded by viral genomes." @default.
