- W193849712 abstract "The sociology of collective behavior studies social conditions such as political structures or shared beliefs as they influence noninstitutionalized, unconventional group activity such as panics, crazes, mass delusions, riots, and reform or revolutionary movements. Several approaches to understanding collective behavior will be examined, including Smelser's theory of collective behavior, resource mobilization, the political process model, the political opportunity model, social network analysis, the new social psychology of social movements, and the historical–comparative analysis of revolutions. It will be shown that Smelser's theory focused on social conditions influencing the origin of collective behavior and social movements, whereas subsequent approaches—beginning with resource mobilization—began to shift the basic question being addressed to the conditions influencing success or failure of social movements. However, as Klandermans has indicated, many of the recent categories of analysis are actually similar to those pioneered by Smelser, even if utilized differently. Considering all of these developments, the sociology of collective behavior has become one of the most dynamic and innovative fields in sociology." @default.
