- W194008876 abstract "This chapter discusses industrial, commercial, medical, and defence applications. In areas of manufacturing such as car assembly where automation is the key to low cost production, substantial investments are made to incorporate robots on the production lines. For simple tasks such as component manufacture, numerical-control machines are used. Component manufacturing information is programmed into the machine memory and the system produces components for as long as it is fed with raw materials. When the components are brought together for final assembly, robots carry out positioning and welding with a high degree of precision. The availability and relatively low cost of color cameras have opened up new possibilities in many areas of industrial control systems. Food production and processing is one such area. Consumers are faced with a bewildering array of products as producers vie for a share of the market. The choice of product is made not only on the basis of low cost, but also on the basis of perceived quality. The mining industry is one in which the use of CCTV equipment adds greatly to the safety of the personnel and efficiency of the plant. Cameras for use underground are designed to be used in areas where explosive gases may be present. In coal mines, the seams are blasted to break up the coal. This then has to be moved up to the surface for treatment." @default.
