- W194224409 abstract "It is common knowledge that the adult height of healthy children reared in modern times reflects their parents’ heights, yet we have no certain knowledge of which genes are passed through the generations to effect this phenomenon. It seems logical that some of the genetic determinants of stature reside in the terminal regions of the short arm of the X chromosome because patients with Turner syndrome caused by deletions of this region are short. A recent report (1) purports to have identified a novel and important growth regulating gene within this region. This gene was termed SHOX, for short stature homeobox-containing gene, because of its homeodomain structure and because mutations of the gene were found in a number of children with idiopathic short stature. The implication is that SHOX might regulate the expression of an array of other genes more directly involved regulation of growth and thus serve as a master growth determinant. However, at this point, the precise function and downstream targets of SHOX are not known and more study and evidence are needed before its exact role in growth control can be appreciated." @default.
