- W194594923 abstract "Ischemia leads to loss of cellular ion homeostasis, with efflux of K’ from energy-deprived cells, and their uptake of Na’, Cr, and Cat+ [1,2,3]. Two of the ionic events are considered of pathophysiological importance. The uptake of Na’ plus cr is accompanied by osmotically obligated water, i.e. by cell swelling. If the swelling is extensive it can cause cell injury by overstretching of membranes (“osmolytic damage”). The other mechanism is related to excessive influx of calcium, with an ensuing rise in the free cytosolic calcium concentration (Ca2+;). This can cause either immediate or delayed brain damage, secondary to overactivation of proteases, lipases, and endonucleases, and to enhancement of free radical production [4,5,6,7]." @default.
