- W1946119117 abstract "T has become the most importantimaging technique for evaluatingthe abdomen and pelvis. CT is usedto examine patients with acute abdominal com-plaints, known or suspected malignancy, ab-dominal and pelvic trauma, and inflammatoryconditions. When CT images of the abdomenand pelvis are interpreted, the focus is oftenplaced on the peritoneal cavity, the mesentery, and the parenchymal organs. A common miscon-ception is that CT provides only limited informa-tion with respect to the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, recent technologic advances and ac-cumulated experience in image interpretationsuggest that substantial information regardinggastrointestinal tract disorders can be obtained.Normal variants—as well as abnormal condi-tions—may cause thickening of the bowelwall. In this review, the normal CT appearanceof the bowel wall and the different causes ofbowel wall thickening will be described. The various criteria that allow one to differ-entiate normal variants and abnormal condi-tions are reviewed, including attenuationpattern of bowel wall thickening; degree ofbowel wall thickening; circumferential sym-metric thickening versus asymmetric thicken-ing; focal, segmental, or diffuse involvement;and associated perienteric abnormalities." @default.
