Nevertheless, all techniques are based on the chemical transformation of molecular precursors into extended inorganic networks, and are generally summarized as sol-gel processes in a broader sense. In this chapter, the particles are divided into two subgroups: silica and metal oxide particles, because both systems have different challenges. In addition, the chapter is also divided in accordance with the preparation routes toward the nanoparticles, namely, aqueous and nonaqueous sol-gel processes. The chapter also describes surface functionalization which must be carried out for the implementation of the nanoparticles into devices. Finally, it discusses the effect of the thus formed particles on properties of nanocomposites." @default.
