For too long have the peoples of this region been vic tims of tension and conflict arising out of lack of understanding and re ligious intolerance. The successive waves of sectarianism, regionalism and chauvinism have swept over them to contribute to this unhappy situ ation. Over the past few decades, however, realization has grown that the entire region would benefit from a mutual understanding which alone can pave the way for better relationship and co-operation. The peoples of the countries of South Asia have one great thing in common. They are heirs to a great civilization, a civilization whose roots lie deep in antiquity and whose predominant feature is that it is not wholly indigenous but a product of continuing synthesis between ele ments, internal and external, old and new. Before the coming of the Aryans around 1200 B.C., a highly developed urban civilization flourished in South Asia, the ruins of which are found in Mohenjo Daro and Harappa in Pakistan. The Aryan invasion probably destroyed much of the exterior symbols of that civilization but then the Aryans them selves absorbed many elements of the indigenuous Dravidian culture and laid the foundations of the great Hindu-Buddhist civilization. The Arab conquest of Sind around 711 A.D. and the coming of the Turks, Afghans and Mughals during the subsquent centuries brought the Indian sub-continent in contact with a new and dynamic culture which developed under the banner of Islam.
