- W1952179710 abstract "Age-related problems (e.g., adolescence, mid-life crisis, or old age) have to be viewed in the context of the life course as a whole. The status of older people is bound up with the evolution of the family. In rural societies, the ambivalent regard for older people is especially associated with family tensions concerning rights in property, where the most senior members are the custodians of the land. Where there is no permanent property associated with the family, as among urban migrants or marginalized groups, there tends to be a loss of status associated with aging. The experience of aging is examined from a number of points of view: women have a different profile of experience from men; aging entails a discontinuous dialectical process whereby mounting contradictions within the family lead to critical changes, highlighted by rites of transition; the experience of aging has to be disentangled from the experience of historical change. In certain societies, age-set systems institutionalize the process of maturation and aging. The sheer complexity of these systems provide a unique opportunity to explore different facets of this process, notably in terms of tensions associated with the succession of generations within the family." @default.
