Smith and Wesson (2) proposed using phenobarbital, a long-acting barbiturate, as a substitute for the primary addicting agent, when treating withdrawal from various nonopiate drugs. In this case we used phenobarbital to treat the glutethimide abstinence syndrome.A 28-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of chronic glutethimide abuse.
