- W19533090 abstract "Publisher Summary XX—sex-reversed—male mammals are sterile, with testes devoid of germ cells in the adult, because spermatogonia carrying two X chromosomes degenerate before puberty. One of the two X chromosomes is inactivated in all somatic XX cells in mammals, and in the early development of the germ line. The inactive X has been shown in mice to be reactivated before birth in male as well as in female germ cells; therefore, it might be that some X-linked gene acts as a cell-lethal in spermatogonia when expressed in two doses. Because of their desire to have children, many infertile men attend infertility clinics, and are subjected to chromosomal investigation. Numerous XX males have been identified in this way. Sterile male mice are seldom if ever subjected to routine karyotyping: there are many possible causes of infertility, and in most mouse colonies the offending male would simply be discarded." @default.
