- W195570313 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews that turbulence and dynamo have been both studied for a long time. However, the connection between turbulence and dynamo has been more scarcely investigated 300 000 entries on Google for both turbulence and dynamo, while it has recently regain a boost of interest, due to recent experimental advances with liquid sodium dynamos. In these experiments, the Reynolds number routinely reaches a few 106, still far away from astrophysical or geophysical Reynolds numbers, but way into what one usually calls a fully turbulent regime. The purpose of this course is therefore not to present an exhausting review about turbulence, nor about dynamo but rather a panorama of some issues connecting turbulence to dynamo, that have been raised by the recent results of the Riga, Karlsruhe and VKS experiments. The chapter discusses that among all the disorder occurring in a turbulent flows, one can however define more regular and ordered things by considering average quantities. The toroidal flow is made of two counter-rotating zones. This global topology is only slightly affected by the presence of an annulus at the mid-plane. However, the convergence towards this mean flow is more deeply affected by the annulus. Indeed, when one averages over only 20 images, one sees already the general topology of the mean flow in the case where the annulus is present, while there are still some sort of coherent structures at the mid-plane when the annulus is removed. These coherent structures are in fact the large scale vortices present in the shear layer, that are responsible for the slow time dynamics." @default.
