- W195820766 abstract "John A. Williams was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1925 and spent his youth in Syracuse, New York. Although he did not publish his first novel until he was thirty-five, his last twelve years have been prolific: he has written five more novels, a biography of Richard Wright, a journal of his travels through America in 1963, and a controversial book on Martin Luther King, and has edited several other books. Williams's critical reception, although wide, has been an imbalanced one. His reviewers point to his concern with racial, social and political themes in his work while they overlook the philosophical and psychological structures that give meaning to those themes. For instance, the situation of blacks in America supplied Williams with the perfect metaphor for studying the nature and influence of history and for testing whether man, either as an individual or as a race, can transcend the nightmarish role that history has fashioned for him. But his critics have not granted him this kind of concern; nor have they looked at his attempts to explain the unique psychological insights he has gained in studying the effects of racism; nor have they investigated the existential framework in which he writes. As Williams points out, these matters are discussed only in relation to white writers." @default.
