- W196013387 abstract "It is important to stage malignant neoplasms in order to be able to: (1) plan a rational program of therapy, (2) compare comparable lesions and various methods of treatment in end result studies. The first staging system for malignant neoplasms was designed for carcinoma of the cervix. This was first undertaken by the League of Nations and then revised in the ‘Annual Report on the Results of Treatment in Carcinoma of the Uterus’. Since then, many staging systems for different neoplasms have been designed. Because of their small numbers and numerous histological types, a clinical staging system for sarcomas was not attempted until recently. It has been suggested that histologic type is not as important as histologic grading in soft tissue sarcomas and, consequently, all soft tissue sarcomas could be grouped together to allow sufficient numbers to formulate a staging system. A Task Force was appointed in 1968 by The American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting to devise a staging system for sarcomas of soft tissue. They utilized the TNM system devised by the Union Internationale Contre le Cancere — T standing for tumor and recorded by size or with local invasion of nerves, blood vessels or bone; N for lymph node involvement; and M for metastases. They also felt that grade was important and added this component to their staging system, thus, evaluating four characteristics of soft tissue sarcomas (Table 1). This staging system has not been found useful by most surgical oncologists. It is rather cumbersome with four items to evaluate and nine different stages." @default.
