- W196164089 abstract "Public and regulatory pressure to clean up hazardous waste sites can crash headlong into the reality of finite financial resources. That intensifies the need to address environmental, public health and regulatory objectives, and to do so through financially prudent remedial methods. One such technique, which has been pioneered but is not yet commonly applied to remedial projects, is referred to as passive remediation. Close monitoring of the natural degradation of contaminated soils can provide cost-effective remediation. Passive remediation is an outgrowth of the recognition that biological, physical and chemical processes constantly are at work in nature. Under specific conditions, contaminants left in place in soil or groundwater undergo natural degradation that reduces contaminant concentrations to acceptable levels. When it can be demonstrated that natural degradation has reduced the contaminant concentrations, a sensible argument can be made for leaving the material where it is and letting nature do its work. Despite its name, passive remediation is not to be confused with so-called no-action'' alternatives, in which materials identified as non-hazardous are left undisturbed and unmonitored. In fact, passive remediation requires a substantial amount of work, ranging from site reviews to analytical investigations, agency interfacing, and data documentation. This remedial strategy ismore » not universally applicable, even when the approach can be defended scientifically. The applicability of a passive remediation strategy will depend on public opinion, land-use planning, and financial considerations. Of particular importance is the perspective and involvement of the regulatory community, which must first accept the sensibility of the strategy and then concur with its application.« less" @default.
