- W196165612 abstract "Increased overweight trends in China are more pronounced among adults than children and among males versus females, with the greatest increases among adults in low-income, rural and male populations. Dietary correlates of the differential trends are examined by age-group, gender, income, and residence from 1991–2004. Data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey is used. Relative measures of dietary and beverage intake by age-group, gender, income, and residence are compared by analysis of covariance with age as the covariate. Increases in the % of total energy intake (E) as fat are the most distinct dietary change. Increases are highest for adolescents, rural, and low-income groups; little gender variation is seen across age-groups. Corresponding decreases in % E as carbohydrate are found; increases in % E as protein are small. Beverage trends do not explain differences. Dietary changes correlate with increased overweight trends based on residence and income differentials, but additional research integrating dietary changes with other environmental and biological factors is needed to elucidate the influence of gender and age on overweight prevalence increases in China.
