- W1963535512 abstract "We investigated the relative importance of resource, grazing, and life-history processes for the dynamics of the dinoflagellate Peridinium limbatum in two bog lakes with very different population densities. These lakes have a number of common chemical features but differ considerably in their morphometry. We tested the hypotheses that differences in dinoflagellate populations were regulated by differences in (i) growth processes as influenced by nutrient limitation, (ii) loss processes via zooplankton grazing, and (or) (iii) emergence from resting cysts as a function of lake morphometry. Nutrient concentrations and zooplankton density were manipulated in two 12-day enclosure experiments conducted simultaneously in each lake. Dinoflagellates in treatments receiving nutrients did not increase and also showed no response to zooplankton grazing. Overall, our results suggest that resource availability and zooplankton grazing are not dominant controlling mechanisms for dinoflagellate populations in either lake. Also, neither mechanism explains the differences in dinoflagellate population densities between the lakes. In contrast, a simple model based on measured emergence rates and lake morphometry successfully accounted for the dissimilar population densities of the two bogs. Our results suggest that interactions between life history and lake morphometry can play an important role in regulating phytoplankton populations. Resume : Nous avons OtudiO liinfluence relative des ressources, du broutage et des processus du cycle biologique sur la dynamique des populations du dinoflagellO Peridinium limbatum de deux lacs-tourbires aux densitOs de population trs diffOrentes. Ces lacs ont en commun un certain nombre de caractOristiques chimiques, mais diffrent considOrablement liun de liautre au point de vue morphomOtrique. Nous avons vOrifiO plusieurs hypothses susceptibles diexpliquer les diffOrences observOes entre les populations de dinoflagellOs : elles seraient dues ‡ des diffOrences touchant (i) les processus de croissance, lesquels dOpendraient des apports en nutriments, (ii) les pertes dues au broutage des dinoflagellOs par le zooplancton et (ou) (iii) lieffet de liactivation des cystes dormants sur la morphomOtrie lacustre. Nous avons modifiO les apports de nutriments et la densitO du zooplancton dans deux expOriences de 12 jours menOes simultanOment dans chacun des lacs. Dans les cas oo les apports de nutriments ont OtO accrus, les dinoflagellOs niont pas augmentO et rien nia OtO observO relativement ‡ lieffet du broutage. Dans liensemble, nos rOsultats indiquent que les apports de nutriments et le broutage zooplanctonique niont pas diaction rOgulatrice majeure sur les dinoflagellOs des deux lacs OtudiOs. En outre, ni liun ni liautre de ces mOcanismes niexplique les diffOrences de densitOs constatOes entre les populations des deux lacs. Par contre, un modle simple Otabli diaprs des mesures de liactivation des cystes et de la morphomOtrie lacustre a permis diexpliquer la diffOrence de densitO entre les populations de dinoflagellOs des deux tourbires. Nos rOsultats laissent entrevoir que les interactions entre le cycle biologique et la morphomOtrie lacustre pourraient avoir un effet rOgulateur important sur les populations phytoplanctoniques.
