- W1963614059 abstract "Drawing on oral testimony, this paper examines the «imagined community» of Ukrainians in Bradford. It explores how their sense of a Ukrainian identity has been shaped by memories of Ukraine's troubled history and by the changing international political context, up to and immediately after Ukrainian independence in 1991. Emphasising differences of generation and gender and contrasts between formal and informal modes of organization, the paper rejects the idea of a unitary «Ukrainian community» in Bradford, suggesting that the impression of unity, prior to independence, was a public position policed by the Ukrainians» political and religious leadership and based on the imposition of selective silences and collusions. With recent political changes, ways of «narrating the nation» are also changing, raising complex questions about the nature of collective memory and the politics of representation." @default.
