• W1963658962 abstract "Abstract A simple semi-empirical theory combining the concepts of the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory with second moment closure methods for turbulence is developed. The closure expressions are all conventional but a novel feature of this contribution is the use of σ w λ as a time scale where λ is the wavelength of the peak in the ω (vertical velocity) spectrum. This allows all constants to be evaluated under neutral conditions using only values of the reduced spectral frequency of the peak,fm, the von Karman constant k, uθ u ∗ T ∗ , σ T |T ∗ |,(φ M and φφ h . The theory predicts σ w u ∗ = 1.28 , σ u u ∗ = 2.1 , and σ v u ∗ = 1.78 at neutral. Values of these quantities under stable and unstable conditions, predicted by the theory agree quite well with observations. The final mathematical expressions for this theory are very simple algebraic statements only depending upon ζ, the Monin-Obukhov stability parameter. The final result is a simple method for calculating realistic values of the turbulent moments in the surface layer for applications to problems in air pollution transport." @default.
